Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between causal perceptions and emotional responses of cancer patients. The subjects for this study were 246 cancer patients who have been hospitalized in six university hospitals in Seoul.
Data were collected from June 1 to December 29, 1993, by means of a questionnaire.
The instrument used for this study were the causal perception scale and emotional responses scale developed by the researchers. The data were analyzed by number and percentage, factor analysis, stepwise multiple regression, using the SPSS program.
The tools used in this study was by structured questionnaire which was organized based on previous literature review and facetoface interview by researchers.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows ;
1. The tool measuring the causal perceptions of cancer patients which is organized for this research revealed relatively high reliability with Chronbach´s a=.98. This tool was structured with 60 items. The items were analyzed in to 13 factors.
2. The tool measuring the emotional responses of cancer patients which is organized for this research revealed relatively high reliability with Chronbach´s a=.98. This tool was structured with 40 items. The items were analyzed in to 9 factors.
3. Self negative causal perception effects to hope-less and negative emotional responses, while self positive causal perception effects to christian and hopeful emotional responses.
It is hoped that the study provide the chance ofdeveloping nursing intervention in emotional aspect to help cancer patients accept and overcome their disease as self positive causal perception instead of self negative causal perception.
